What is Merge PDF?

Combining multiple PDF files into a single document is a common need whether you are consolidating receipts for expense reports, merging scanned contracts, compiling research papers, or joining presentation slides. The Merge PDF tool lets you combine several PDF files into one cohesive document quickly and easily — all directly in your browser with no file uploads to any server.

You can add PDF files one at a time or drag and drop multiple files at once. Each file appears as a visual card with a thumbnail preview of its first page, file name, size, and page count. If a page orientation is wrong, you can rotate individual PDFs by 90-degree increments before merging. The tool preserves the order you add files, and a clear number label on each card helps you keep track of the sequence.

Once you are happy with the order and orientation, click Merge and a 5-second processing spinner provides clear visual feedback while the tool combines your files using the pdf-lib library — a professional-grade PDF manipulation engine. The result is a single merged PDF that you can download or share directly from your browser. All processing is 100% local, so your documents never leave your computer.

How to Use Merge PDF

  1. Start by dropping PDF files onto the upload area or click "Add PDF Files" to select them from your device. You can add files one at a time or select multiple files at once using Ctrl+click or Shift+click.
  2. Each added file appears as a card with a thumbnail preview of its first page, the file name, size, and page count. Hover over a card to reveal the rotate and remove buttons in the top-right corner.
  3. Click the rotate icon (circular arrow) on any card to rotate that PDF by 90 degrees clockwise. Click repeatedly to rotate through all four orientations. The current rotation angle is displayed on the card.
  4. Click the X icon to remove any file from the merge list. You can always add more files using the "+ Add PDF" button above the grid.
  5. Review the file count, total size, and total page count displayed at the top. Ensure your total does not exceed 50 MB.
  6. Once you have at least 2 files, click the "Merge X PDFs (Y pages)" button at the bottom. A loading spinner will appear with a progress percentage.
  7. After approximately 5 seconds, the merged PDF is ready. Click "Download Merged PDF" to save the file, or use the "Share" button if your browser supports sharing files directly.
  8. Click "Merge New Files" to clear everything and start over with a fresh set of PDFs.

Tip: Add files in the order you want them to appear in the final document. The merge order follows the visual order shown in the grid.

Example

Input:

File 1: cover-letter.pdf (2 pages, 1.2 MB)
File 2: resume.pdf (3 pages, 850 KB)
File 3: references.pdf (1 page, 420 KB)

Output:

merged.pdf (6 pages, 2.5 MB)

The tool combines all six pages from the three source files into a single PDF. Page order follows the file order: cover-letter page 1, cover-letter page 2, resume page 1, resume page 2, resume page 3, references page 1. Individual page content, formatting, fonts, and images are preserved exactly as they appear in the original files.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum number of files I can merge?

There is no hard limit on the number of PDF files you can add, but the total combined size of all files must not exceed 50 MB. If you need to merge more files than fit within this limit, consider merging in batches or compressing individual PDFs first using our PDF Compressor tool.

Can I reorder files after adding them?

Currently, files are merged in the order they were added. We recommend adding files in the sequence you want them to appear in the final document. You can remove a file and re-add it later to change its position in the merge order.

Does rotating a PDF affect the original file?

No. Rotation is applied only during the merge process. The original file on your device remains unchanged. The rotation angle is applied to every page of that specific PDF document in the merged output.

Will the merged PDF preserve formatting and fonts?

The tool uses pdf-lib, a professional PDF manipulation library that preserves all existing content, formatting, fonts, images, and vector graphics from each source PDF. Text remains selectable and searchable in the merged output.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

The tool attempts to load PDFs with encryption disabled. Password-protected PDFs that require a password to open cannot be read by the browser and will fail to load. You must remove the password protection before merging.

Is my data private when merging PDFs?

Absolutely. All processing happens entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your PDF files are never uploaded to any server. The tool uses pdf-lib running directly in your browser to read, modify, and merge your documents. Your data never leaves your device.

Can I use this tool on mobile devices?

Yes, the tool is fully responsive and works on any modern mobile browser. You can add PDFs from your phone or tablet storage, and the thumbnail grid adapts to your screen size with responsive columns.

What happens to bookmarks and annotations?

The merge process copies page content including text, images, and vector elements. Advanced PDF features like bookmarks, annotations, form fields, and internal links may not be preserved in the merged output. For such cases, consider using dedicated PDF editing software.

How long does it take to merge PDFs?

The tool displays a 5-second spinner to provide consistent visual feedback. The actual merge time depends on the number of pages and total file size. Small files merge almost instantly, while larger combinations may take slightly longer. The spinner ensures you always see a clear transition from input to output.

Can I merge PDFs of different page sizes?

Yes. Each source PDF retains its original page size in the merged document. This means you can combine letter-size, A4, and custom-size pages into a single PDF. Page sizes are not normalized or modified.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, the Merge PDF tool is completely free with no hidden costs, subscriptions, or premium tiers. There are no watermarks, usage limits, or registration requirements. You can merge as many PDFs as you need.

Does the tool work with scanned PDFs or image-based pages?

Yes, the tool works with any PDF, including scanned documents. Scanned PDFs contain embedded images of each page, and these images are preserved in the merged output just like text-based pages.

What file types are supported?

Only PDF files with the .pdf extension and application/pdf MIME type are supported. Other file types will be rejected with a clear error message. To merge other document types, convert them to PDF first using our HTML to PDF or image to PDF converters.

Why do you need at least 2 files to merge?

The Merge PDF tool is designed to combine multiple PDFs into one. If you only have a single PDF, there is nothing to merge. You can use other tools in our suite like the PDF Compressor to reduce its file size or the JPG to PDF / PNG to PDF converters to add more pages from images.
